Great Dorset Steam Fair

The Great Dorset Steam Fair is one of the big events in Dorset rivaling the Bournemouth Air Show in terms of the numbers of people it attracts.Up to 200,000 over the 5 day event. In 2011 the dates are 31st August to 4th September.

The event is held in some fields next to the A354 in the village of Tarrant Monkton between Salisbury and Blandford. The post code for sat navs is DT11 8HX.

The nearest railway station is Salisbury but it is still a bit of a hike to get to the show ground so get the 183 bus run by Wilts and Dorset buses,go to their website to view the timetable. If you do come by car then it can take some time to get in as you are driving though so field gates one at a time. Then you park in said field so let us hope it does not get too boggy.

You will of course need a ticket to get in and it is better to buy them in advance as there is some saving.A family ticket will cost you £4 less if booked online.Go to festival website

Music Festival

This show is not just a steam fair and not just a day time event either.Things really start to heat up once the sun goes down.A variety of acts are performing this year over a number of stages, and yes the Wurzels will be there as well as the usual array of tribute acts as follows:

Bee Gees

Rod Stuart

ZU2

The Police

These are the headline acts for the outdoor stage and there is an additional fee to pay to see them on top of the steam fair admission price.

The organisers tell me that you can only buy tickets for these shows on the day if there are any left, none online.

There are three other stages; the Folk,Country & Western & Back Bull Stages. These are all free and have concerts going on during the day as well.
