Jul 17, Established Dorchester Business Expands Into New Territory

Local business entrepreneurs Adam Smith and Jon Sloper have expanded into online retailing. Jon’s company Alacrify has been successfully building sites and systems for Dorset businesses and communities for seven years, from the Dorset County Show and MaidenNewton.info, to Dukes Auctions and Portland Port. Adam recently joined forces with Jon, and together they set up Frampton Retail at the end of 2011 to run online retail businesses. Their showcase site, MothPrevention.com, provides the UK’s widest range of moth control products for dealing with an infestation of clothing moths, carpet moths or food moths, and to deter returning visitors.

MothPrevention.com draws on Adam and Jon’s combined expertise in online retail and business development, and seeks to meet a growing need for prevention and treatment of moth infestation and damage. Early signs indicate that there is a significant market for their products, with research showing that an estimated 1.5 million households in the UK have suffered from moth damage. A recent feature in Spring 2012 about Moth Prevention on the BBC’s The One Show and several related discussions on BBC Radio 2 over the past year highlight just how widespread the problem has become.

Maiden Newton residents Adam and Jon made a conscious choice to set up close to home, reducing travel and commuting time, draw on local expertise and stay within their community to build the business. “With good phone, broadband and delivery connections you can set up online businesses almost anywhere.” comments Jon, “And working near to home and using other local business services gives a feel-good factor that is hard to beat.”

The BBC reports that Lyme Regis is beginning a year-long celebration of its maritime life, culture and heritage.

Maritime Lyme 2011 is launching on the waterfront of Lyme Regis with a programme of family events.

Activities began at the RNLI Lifeboat Station which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year.

Ms Godwin, curator at the town's Philpot Museum, added: "All the people and organisations in the town with a connection to the sea have got involved and the project has snowballed from there."

The "Littlesea" vessel - constructed by boatbuilder Gail McGarva to resemble a 17th Century Dorset fishing boat called a lerret - will be at several special events throughout 2011.

Jul 3, Popular Dorset Writer Bob Westwood launches walking tour company

Writer and photographer Bob Westwood has been walking the Purbecks for many years. Trained as a geologist at Exeter University, and having recently retired from teaching, he produces a range of popular guides that are stocked in National Trust shops and tourism centres across the county. This year he has also written the new Jurassic Coast walking guides for the Jurassic Coast Trust , published by Coastal Publishing.

Purbeck, sitting in the heart of the Jurassic Coast (a Unesco World Heritage site), has been inspiration for artists such as Paul Nash and writer Thomas Hardy, and is a haven for some of the UK’s rarest species of wildlife. It is a Mecca for those looking for outdoors breaks, where they can enjoy sailing, cycling, horse riding and in particular walking.

Already involved in walking groups, and with the recent success of this year’s 1st Swanage and Purbeck Walking Festival, Bob has now launched “Jurassic Coast Walking” www.jurassiccoastwalking.co.uk, a tailor-made tour company, giving an insider’s guide to the area. Guests will be encouraged to take up the opportunity of a car free break, travelling by rail (only 2 ½ hours from London Waterloo), with collection from main line stations as well as flights into Bournemouth Airport. Linking in with local accommodation providers such as the beautiful Kingston Country Courtyard and The Scott Arms, guests will return after an active day out to fantastic local food and 4 * comfort; the essence being: “leave your city stresses and your car, and get away from it all.”

Bob says:
“ Purbeck is an absolute jewel in the South Coast, and of such importance geologically. Many people visit the area to walk but possibly don’t know much about how this wonderful landscape has been formed, or miss a great deal of what’s on offer. I want to give them a bit more to think about whilst they are here. The tours will be informal but informative, I hope people will go home feeling they have learnt something.”

Bob also hopes Jurassic Coast Walking will appeal to special interest groups such as photographers and historians.

“We really want to be as bespoke as possible”

The BBC reports a 12 year old boy had to be rescued from mud caused by a landslide at Charmouth on the Jurassic Coast.

The cliffs here are very unstable and this incident highlights the need to be very careful when looking for fossils.

Don't hack away at the cliff face.Just pick over what has already come away. You will find something

There is a movement growing here in Dorset and all over the world. It is the Transition Movement."A transition to what?" I hear you say.

A transition to a world where there is no or little fossil fuel left to burn.

We have passed the peak of oil extraction and supply is in long term decline.Oil prices can only rise and that will put the things we take for granted like car travel out of reach for most people.

So we must adjust to a world without oil and manage that change in a calm and thoughtful way.

It will not be easy.

So the transition movement is starting to grow.People who are coming together to share ideas on how their skills can best be used in a post carbon world.

For details on how to become involved click on the link below.

Get ready for the big road works coming to the A338 also known as the spur road in September of this year. This is the main road into Bournemouth and is used by thousands of cars every day.

The works will take 7 months to complete and will involve lane closures in both directions.

I think the B3347 down from Ringwood rather than Matchams Lane will the best way of avoiding the traffic.

Here's the map.You decide<p>

The annual Swanage & Purbeck Walking Festival is now an essential event for the spring calendar for walkers of all abilities.
Only 2.5 hours from London Waterloo, and a World Heritage site, the Purbecks are blessed with breathtaking scenery such as the chalk cliffs around the Studland peninsular, historic villages such as Corfe Castle, and the hidden coves of Chapman’s Pool and Kimmeridge Bay. Miles of coastal and countryside paths make for unrivalled walking, as well as bird and wildlife watching, particularly as the area is home to many rare species.

A varied programme will be running throughout the week which has been specifically designed to cater for a wide range of interests and abilities as well as giving an insight into the area’s fascinating history. Local and specialist guides will be on hand to reveal the delights and secrets of the area, and Festival participants will able to take advantage of inclusive steam rail travel on Swanage’s world famous steam railway as well as sample some of the delicious local Purbeck produce and finest ales with inclusive pub lunches in some instances.

The festival organisers have joined forces with specialist walking company HF Holidays, the UK’s leading provider of outdoor, walking and activity breaks who have been coming to the area for many years.

Alan Power chair of the hospitality association and festival co-ordinator said:

“We are absolutely delighted to have HF Holidays on-board, they have a wealth of experience, which should make the festival a great success, and which we hope will be an annual event.”
